OCEANPORT, N.J., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Mayfield won the six-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint Friday, as the 24th annual Breeders' Cup horse-racing event began at Oceanport, N.J.

On a rain-soaked and sloppy track at Monmouth Park, Mayfield -- a six-year-old mare ridden by Elvis Trujillo, came from way back to finish ahead of 43-1 long-shot Miraculous Miss, with Miss Macy Sue finishing third in the 10-horse field.

"She finished so strong," said Trujillo. "They were going too fast on the front end. I knew they were going to stop. With them going so fast, I knew it was going to help us. I’m thrilled, thrilled."

Despite setting a fast pace at the start, Dream Rush finished fifth.

Two months ago at Saratoga, Mayfield won the Ballerina Stakes as a 16-1 long-shot.

Mayfield Friday paid $18.00, $9.00 and $6.00, as she won for the ninth time in 28 lifetime starts.

Miraculous Miss paid $37.40 and $17.20, and Miss Macy Sue paid $4.60.
