Defending champ ousted in Lyon

LYON, France, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled off a surprise Thursday, eliminating defending champion Richard Gasquet in the second round of the Lyon Grand Prix.

The fourth-seeded Gasquet was a 6-4, 6-4, victim of Tsonga, who will take on Olivier Rochus in Friday's quarterfinals.

Rochus saved five match points before defeating Mardy Fish in a three-hour match, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (17-15). Fish served up 43 aces to only two for Rochus.

Former champion Ivan Ljubicic also reached the quarterfinals, downing Thierry Ascione, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6.

Julien Benneteau was a 7-5, 6-4, winner over Gilles Simon; Sebastien Grosjean out-lasted Fabrice Santoro, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; and qualifier Alejandro Falla stormed past Olivier Marach, 6-2, 6-2.
