
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko Thursday lost his second-round match to Marin Cilic, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, at the St. Petersburg Open in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The Russian, playing before a home crowd, had 10 double faults and his serve was broken four times.
Before one of his worst efforts in 2007, Davydenko, the No. 4 player in this week's world rankings, had secured a berth in the Masters Cup Shanghai at season's end.
In other results, second-seeded Brit Andy Murray beat Czech qualifier Lukas Dlouhy, 6-2, 6-4; No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny topped defending champion Mario Ancic of Croatia, 6-4, 6-2; fourth-seeded Italian Potito Starace downed Russian qualifier Mikhail Ledovskikh, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; and sixth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain beat unseeded Italian Simone Bolelli, 6-4, 6-4.
In Friday's quarters, Murray meets fifth-seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov, Youzhny plays seventh-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber, Starace faces Verdasco, and Cilic meets Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.
