
LYON, France, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Former champion Ivan Ljubicic was among Tuesday's first-round winners at the Lyon Tennis Grand Prix.
The fifth-seeded Ljubicic defeated American Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (9-7). Ljubicic won this tennis tournament in 2001 for his first-ever ATP title.
In other action involving seeds, No. 6 Argentine Juan Monaco beat French qualifier Sebastien De Chaunac 6-7 (11-13), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and No. 8 Gilles Simon" class="tpstyle">Frenchman Gilles Simon beat Romanian veteran Andrei Pavel 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Also, German Benjamin Becker defeated veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-3. Clement was champion of this tournament in 2000 and runner-up in 2003.
This week's top seed is American Andy Roddick, who will open play Wednesday against Frenchman Fabrice Santoro. Roddick won this event in 2005 and Santoro in 1997.
