MADRID, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- David Nalbandian rallied Sunday to best Roger Federer in three sets in the Madrid Masters finals in Spain.
After dropping the first set 1-6, the native of Argentina won the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 to become the third player in ATP history to beat the world's top three players in the same tournament.
To qualify for the final, Nalbandian topped second-ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain in Friday’s quarterfinals and No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia in Saturday’s semis.
Previously, only Boris Becker and Djokovic had accomplished the feat.
"His serve surprised me some and I could not play as offensively as I hoped,” the No. 1 seed Federer said. "I’m not too disappointed because I had a good tournament."
It was Nalbandian's first Masters Series title.
He had beaten Federer for the Tennis Masters Cup crown in Shanghai in 2005, and improved to 7-8 lifetime against the 12-time Grand Slam champion.
