BRIDGEVIEW, Ill., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- John Thorrington scored in the 90th minute Sunday afternoon, as the Chicago Fire beat Los Angeles, 1-0, in MLS action at Bridgeview, Ill.

The loss in the regular-season finale eliminated the Galaxy from the post-season picture after a valiant late-season surge.

Thorrington's first goal of the season clinched the final available MLS playoff spot for the Fire (10-10-10), who played before 21,374 fans -- a record crowd at Toyota Park.

The Galaxy (9-14-7), who struggled early after a left-ankle injury to star midfielder David Beckham, were unbeaten in their previous seven games after a seven-game winless streak.

Beckham signed five-year deal worth $32.5 million before the season started, making him the league's highest paid player.

He appeared as a substitute in the 58th minute of the finale, and was unable to score on a free kick opportunity late in the contest.
