“It was very subdued and with not a lot of great shots,” Federer admitted.

“We finished a lot of points on errors, but I was ahead in the score and he had the pressure.”

Federer’s opponent in Sunday’s final will be Argentina’s David Nalbandian, a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) winner against third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

Nalbandian, the last man to beat Federer indoors at the 2005 Masters Cup final in Shanghai, broke the 11-match winning streak of Djokovic after beating three-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals.

“I wasn’t as fresh today as I could be and he deserved to win,” Djokovic said.
