STANFORD, Calif., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Stanford forward Brook Lopez has been declared academically ineligible for the fall Pac-10 school’s first quarter.
Various reports Friday said the 7-foot sophomore from Fresno, Calif. also was suspended from the team indefinitely by Coach Trent Johnson for missing classes.
"This is disappointing for all of us, including Brook," Johnson said on the school's Web site. "He has fallen short on his academic responsibilities and is aware of what needs to be done in order to improve his academic standing with Stanford and our basketball program. We feel that this could be a positive learning experience for him."
Lopez averaged 12.6 points, six rebounds and nearly two blocked shots per contest in 26 games last season, and was named to the 2006-07 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.
"I have failed to live up to my academic requirements and take full responsibility for what has happened," said Lopez. "I promise to work hard to improve my academic standing."
