Ron Springs slips into coma

DALLAS, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs has fallen into a coma seven months after he received a kidney from a former teammate.

Springs is at Medical City Dallas Hospital. His son, corner back Shawn Springs, was allowed to leave the Washington Redskins Tuesday to be at his father's side, The Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.

Sources said Springs became comatose after complications from a Saturday surgery to remove a cyst from his arm.

"Knowing Ron, I'm sure he's fighting like hell, but he's not doing well," one former teammate said.

Springs received a kidney Feb. 28 from ex-teammate Everson Walls, after spending three years on the national transplant list.

The former running back has suffered from Type 2 diabetes for more than 16 years and contracted renal disease in 2002. He was confined to a wheelchair in January 2005 after his right foot and part of his left foot were amputated.
