Breeders Cup has record 141 pre-entrants

OCEANPORT, N.J., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense and Preakness champ Curlin have been entered for the 11 Breeders' Cup horse races Oct. 26-27 at Monmouth Park, N.J.

Three new races are set for Fri. Oct. 26, helping push the total of pre-entered thoroughbreds to a record total of 141 in all.

It will be first time since the races began in 1984 the event will conducted over two days.

Nine thoroughbreds have been pre-entered for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, including Any Given Saturday, Awesome Gem, Diamond Stripes, George Washington, Hard Spun, Lawyer Ron and Tiago.

Eight races are set for Saturday, with the $3 million Turf including a dozen pre-entered horses.

The 1 1/8-mile $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff has 15 ladies pre-entered.

Topping the list are Alabama Stakes winner Lady Joanne, Clement Hirsh Handicap champ Nashoba's Key and Octave, winner of the Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks.
