Zurich: Mauresmo wins; injured Serena out

ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo was a winner, but injured Serena Williams dropped out Tuesday at the $1.34 million Zurich Open.

Mauresmo defeated Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Williams lost to Swiss Patty Schnyder 6-0, 3-0. Williams retired with a right adductor strain after having some tape removed from her right thigh midway through the first set.

Hantuchova edged Russian Dinara Safina 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), while Bartoli came back from a first-set loss to handily oust Shuai Peng of China 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-1 at Hallenstadion. Hantuchova lost in last year's final to Russian Maria Sharapova.
