SOUTH BEND, Ind., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis said junior Evan Sharpley will start at quarterback this week, the third player he's started at the position this season.
It will be the first career start for Sharpley, who was Brady Quinn's backup last season. Sharpley has appeared in six games this season completing 43-of-89 passes for 479 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
"I think Evan this week gives us the best chance of winning," Weis said.
The Fighting Irish opened the season with sophomore Demetrius Jones at quarterback. He was replaced after the first-game loss by freshman Jimmy Clausen. But Clausen has proved ineffective and Notre Dame has lost six of its seven games.
Notre Dame plays against No. 13 Southern California this week.
