NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The National Lacrosse League said it was canceling its 2008 season because of a contract impasse with the league's players association.
A release form the NLL said the league offered players a 3 percent pay increase and a five-year contract and the Professional Lacrosse Players Association countered with a one-year deal with a provision to replace the league's salary cap.
"I would like to apologize to our fans, first and foremost," NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings said. "We are deeply disappointed that the PLPA's executive committee rejected our proposal without permitting all of the players to vote on the league's final offer. … Our owners made the best offer they could make while maintaining a sound business model."
The league's existing collective bargaining agreement expired in July and there was midnight Monday deadline to reach a new deal. When that passed, the NLL decided to call off the 2008 season, which was to have begun Dec. 27.
The National Lacrosse League has 14 teams that play lacrosse indoors on modified hockey rinks.
