MOSCOW, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva will compete for the title Sunday at the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament at Moscow.
Williams, the fourth-seed, downed No. 1 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, in Saturday’s semifinals, while Dementieva was an easy winner in a battle of unseeded Russians against Dinara Safina, 6-1, 6-0.
"(Kuznetsova is) No.2 in the world and has been playing so well this year, so I just felt like the underdog," Williams said. "I didn't feel any pressure at all. Playing a Russian in Russia, I knew everyone wanted her to win, so I shrugged off pressure."
Williams improved to 3-1 lifetime against Kuznetsova, avenging a 6-3, 6-3, loss at last week's quarterfinals in Stuttgart, Germany.
Dementieva was so dominant she closed out her lopsided victory by winning the final 11 games.
Williams and Dementieva will play for a first prize of $182,000.
