Paralyzed H.S. football player dies

CAMDEN, N.J., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A New Jersey high school student has died a year after he was paralyzed during a summer football practice game.

Shykem Lawrence was paralyzed from the neck down after the injury in August 2006. At the time, he was going into his senior year at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, which was playing Eastern Regional High School in a practice game.

Lawrence was a safety on the Wilson team.

Andre Taliaferro, director of a foundation honoring his son, who was paralyzed while playing football at Penn State, told The (South Jersey) Courier-Post that Lawrence died Friday evening.

"It's a huge loss for everyone," Taliaferro said.

Lawrence spent seven months at Cooper Medical Center in Camden and at a Philadelphia rehabilitation center after the injury.
