NHL: N.Y Rangers 3, Washington 1

NEW YORK, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Martin Straka scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first period Friday night, as the New York Rangers beat Washington, 3-1.

New York -- which handed the Capitals their first loss in the new season -- also got first-period goals from Scott Gomez and Michal Rozsival.

Two of the Rangers' goals came on the power play and Jaromir Jagr assisted on all three tallies.

Goaltender Michael Lundqvist stopped 21 of 22 Washington shots, as the Rangers snapped a two-game skid.

Washington's lone score was a power-play goal by Alexander Ovechkin at 7:46 of the first. His second goal of the season tied the contest, 1-1, before Straka scored at 13:26 of the period.

Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig gave up three goals on 41 New York shots.

On the power play, the Rangers went 2-for-7, and the Capitals were 1-for-5.
