WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Washington Wizards center Etan Thomas will be hospitalized 5-7 days to recover from heart surgery.
The procedure Thursday was more extensive than expected.
“He had a condition called bicuspid aortic valve, and the valve developed leakage,” said Dr. Hartzell Schaff, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said in his first public comments . “The regurgitation of the valve was severe. In our opinion, he needed the valve repaired or replaced so he would subsequently not develop heart failure. The recovery is really from the sternal incision. The parts of the surgery we do when he’s asleep are probably not as important as the incision. He is really recovering from the incision (and) his heart functions quite good.”
The 6-foot-10 inch Thomas is expected to miss the season, but his condition is not life-threatening.
“Our concern is about his health,” said Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld. “This isn’t about basketball right now. This is about him getting healthy.”
