Red Sox add Wakefield to ALCS roster

BOSTON, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox Thursday added starter Tim Wakefield to their American League Championship Series roster.

The veteran knuckle-baller had been left out for Boston's division series match-up with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because of soreness in the back of his right shoulder.

Boston swept that series in three games.

"He's doing well -- real well," said Red Sox Manager Terry Francona on the team's Web site after the 41-year-old hurler threw five simulated innings and 77 pitches earlier this week. "He’s real upbeat."

Wakefield has been penciled in as Boston's starter for Game 4 in Cleveland next Tuesday.

To make room for Wakefield on the roster, the Red Sox removed third-string catcher Kevin Cash, who played 12 games after being called up from the minors in mid-August, but did not appear in the ALDS.

The Red Sox-Indians best-of-seven series begins Friday at Boston's Fenway Park.
