NHL: N.Y. Islanders 2, N.Y. Rangers 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Marc-Andre Bergeron had a goal and an assist Wednesday as the New York Islanders nipped the New York Rangers 2-1.

The contest was barely thirty seconds old before the defenseman scored for the first time in the new NHL campaign.

Fellow defenseman Bryan Berard snapped a 1-1 tie with a power play tally at 13:56 of the second, and goalie Rick DiPietro made 36 saves on 37 shots as the Islanders (2-1-0) bounced back from Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Washington.

Fedor Tyutin scored once, and goalie Henrik Lunqvist gave up two goals on 30 shots as the Rangers fell to 1-2-0 in the season’s first week.

On the power play, the Islanders were 1-for-7, while the Rangers were 0-for-6.
