Wozniak takes first-round upset at Bangkok

BANGKOK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Aleksandra Wozniak knocked off eighth-seeded Ioana Raluca Olaru in first-round action at the $200,000 Bangkok Open tennis tournament.

Wozniak, the highest ranked player from Canada, swept by Olaru, 7-5, 6-4, to highlight the first day’s matches at the hard-court tournament.

In other matches, Urszula Radwanska routed Sorana Cirstea, 6-0, 6-3; Casey Dellacqua best Severine Bremond, 6-2, 6-4; and Camille Pin was ahead 7-5 and advanced when Kostanic Tosic retired with a right thoracic spine injury.

Jelena Jankovic is seeded No. 1 this week with Venus Williams second. The field includes fourth-seeded Virginie Razzano, who has won her last two tournaments. She defeated Williams in the final Sunday in Tokyo.

The tournament continues through the week with the 2007 Bangkok Open champion taking home $228,161.
