ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Curt Schilling
hurled seven scoreless innings Sunday as Boston beat the LA Angels of Anaheim, 9-1, to win their AL Division Series in a three-game sweep.
Boston sluggers David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez started Sunday's rout with back-to-back solo homers in the top of the fourth.
The rout was punctuated by Boston's seven-run eighth inning.
Coco Crisp had two RBI, five others knocked in one run, while Ortiz and Mike Lowell had two hits each as the Red Sox beat the Angels for the ninth consecutive time in the post-season.
Schilling (1-0) walked one batter and fanned four as the Red Sox swept the Angels for the second straight time.
The shutout was completed by relievers Hideki Okajima and Eric Gagne.
Howie Kendrick’s ninth inning sacrifice fly produced the Angels' lone run.
Maicer Izturis had three hits, and Orlando Cabrera two, but the punchless Angels stranded 16 runners and scored just three runs in the series.
The loser was Jered Weaver (0-1).
