TALLADEGA, Ala., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon won Sunday’s UAW-Ford 500 Nextel Cup Race, the fourth event of the 10-race "Chase for the Nextel Cup."

Gordon finished the race just .066 seconds in front of Jimmie Johnson for his fifth win of the season and the 80th of his "Cup" career.

"We laid in the back because this car had a lot of unknowns," said Gordon. "We just wanted to play it safe until it counted."

Gordon only led the race for the final lap, but the win still put him four points above Johnson at 5,680.

Clint Bowyer is also now 58 points behind Gordon after finishing in 11th place.

The "Chase for the Nextel Cup" will resume Oct. 13th at the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
