Dougherty takes charge at the Dunhill

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Nick Dougherty shot a 6-under-par 66 Saturday to assume the lead after 54 holes of the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland.

The 25-year-old Englishman is 17-under 199 at the historic St. Andrews golf course, good for a three-shot lead over Australian Peter O’Malley (69). That score equalizes Luke Donald's 2004 tournament record.

"Tomorrow I am going to go out there to shoot a great score and if I do that, then it's going to be hard to catch me," a confident Dougherty told reporters.

"To shoot 66 like that, an easy 66, gives me a lot of confidence for the final round."

O'Malley is 14-under 202.

A group of four players, including defending champion and reigning British Open victor Padraig Harrington (67), is tied for third at 13-under 203 going into Sunday's final round.

The Dunhill is played like the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the PGA Tour with professionals and amateurs playing together for three rounds.
