Tracy had one year remaining on a three-year deal, and was scheduled to be paid $1 million next year.

Pittsburgh won 67 games in Tracy's first season, and 68 in his second, and finished fifth in the National League Central Division in 2006 and in last place this past season.

The 2006 season included a club-record 13-game losing streak in May, and 13 losses in the final 15 games in 2007.

His tenure included the 14th and 15th consecutive losing seasons for the Pirates, matching the second-longest droughts in professional sports history, and his departure follows the firing of General Manager Dave Littlefield earlier this month.

"If they have other plans, that's their choice," Tracy said in a statement.

Also fired were senior director of player development Brian Graham, senior director of scouting Ed Creech and director of baseball operations Jon Mercurio.
