KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Christian Gomez scored 10 minutes into the second half Friday night, allowing D.C. United to escape with a 1-1 tie with Kansas City.

Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman had five saves in the game, pushing his career total to 1,004. He is the third goalkeeper in MLS history to reach 1,000 saves.

Scott Sealy gave the Wizards the lead just before intermission.

United finally got one past Hartman when Marc Burch found Gomez in the box. The one point United earned gave it a five-point advantage over New England for the best record in the league.

Kansas City is in front of eighth-place Chicago by only four points in the battle for the final spot in the playoffs.
