ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Steve Webster's birdie on the 18th hole Thursday was worth a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
Webster carded a seven-under-par 65 in the first round at Carnoustie. Tournament players rotate between Carnoustie, the Old Course at St. Andrews and Kingsbarns Golf Links. The final round Sunday is set for the Old Course for the entire field.
Paul Lawrie and Soren Hansen, who played the Old Course, and Scott Strange and Hennie Otto, who played at Carnoustie, each shot 66. Ten other golfers turned in five-under 67s.
Webster birdied his first three holes Thursday and moved to four-under with a birdie at No. 6. He handed a stroke back at the 11th but answered that with a birdie at 12.
Birdies at 14 and 16 moved him into a tie for the lead and the 5-foot putt for birdie on the last hole of the day gave him the outright lead.
