SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Jesper Parnevik Thursday shot a record 9-under-par 61 in the first round of the PGA's Texas Open Golf Tournament at San Antonio.

A group of 11 players shot 5-under 65, including Dallas native Justin Leonard.

The group trails the leader by four strokes heading into Friday's second round.

A total of 21 players is within five shots of the lead, while nine others shot 3-under 67 to stay within six strokes of Parnevik, including defending champion Eric Axley.

The 42-year-old native of Sweden last won on the PGA Tour in 2001.

His career-best round included a bogey at the 10th hole and birdies at 16, 17, and 18.

"I came here feeling the game was there," Parnevik said.

Leonard won this tournament in 2000 and 2001.

U.S. Amateur champion Colt Knost, making his professional debut, opened with a 1-over 71 to join 16 others.
