NFL to focus on breast cancer this weekend

NEW YORK, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The National Football League designated this weekend NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend.

In a release, the league said it will show its commitment to fighting breast cancer with a number of pregame and in-stadium initiatives and all home teams will name honorary team captains who have been touched by breast cancer or are involved in fighting the disease.

Honorary captains will be invited onto the field for the pregame coin toss, where captains from each club will deliver a bouquet of pink roses to them.

As part of the league's partnership with Lifetime Television in its "Stop Breast Cancer for Life" campaign, Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber and Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme filmed public service announcements to air on the network throughout October.

Barber filmed the PSA to honor his mother, Geraldine, a breast cancer survivor, while Delhomme's announcement focuses on family members who contracted the disease.
