Seeded players advance at Tashkent Open

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Olga Govortsova led a trio of seeded-players to straight-set, first-round victories Tuesday at the $145,000 Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan.

Govortsova took a solid 6-3, 6-3 decision from Renata Voracova. Also winning Tuesday were highly seeded Elena Vesnina, who defeated Alberta Brianti, 6-3, 6-4, and Olga Poutchkova, who beat Iroda Tulyaganova, 7-5, 6-3.

Tulyaganova, from Tashkent, won the tournament in 2000 and was the runner-up last year.

Also posting first-round wins Tuesday were Vesna Manasieva, Evgeniya Rodina, Tatiana Poutchek, Mariya Koryttseva, Katie O'Brien and Anne Kremer.

The 2007 Tashkent Open champion, to be decided Sunday, will earn $21,165.
