TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and left tackle Luke Petitgout have been lost to the NFL's Buccaneers for the season with knee injuries.
Both players suffered injuries to their right knees during Sunday's 20-7 Tampa Bay win over Carolina and will undergo surgery, Tampa Bay Coach Jon Gruden said Monday.
"Obviously, we lost two key members of our football team for the season," said Gruden. "That's a big blow. They're great guys.
"We have some people that need to step up now. We certainly support them and wish them the very best in their recovery. It's a tough day that way …"
Williams was injured when he was knocked out of bounds at the end of an 18-yard run and fell awkwardly. Petitgout's knee was hurt when several players landed on him during a second-quarter play.
First-year lineman Donald Penn was expected to take over for Petitgout at left tackle while Michael Pittman and Earnest Graham will share the load at tailback in place of Williams.
