Phils' Howard is NL player of the week

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Philadelphia's Ryan Howard, who helped the Phillies win their division on the final day of the season, was selected the National League player of the week.

The power-hitting Phillies' first baseman had five home runs and 11 runs batted in for the week that ended Sunday -- the day the Phillies completed their comeback and won the NL East pennant. His 1.095 slugging percentage and 23 total bases for the week were the best in the league over that period.

Howard hit .381 and had home runs in five of the six games he played in. He finished the season with a home run and three RBI Sunday when Philadelphia defeated Washington, 6-1. That, combined with the New York Mets' loss, gave the Phillies their first division crown since 1993.

Monday's announcement marked the second time this season Howard, who was the NL most valuable player last season, was selected player of the week. He also won the week that ended July 22.

Philadelphia opens post-season play Wednesday at home.
