EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Osi Umenyiora racked up a franchise-record six sacks Sunday night, as the New York Giants beat Philadelphia, 16-3.
Mathias Kiwanuka had three sacks and Justin Tuck had two for the Giants (2-2), who posted 12 sacks in all to tie the NFL record. Umenyiora came within one sack of the NFL record for a player in a single game, set by Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1990.
Michael Strahan got his share of the sack action -- running his Giants total to 133 ½ and surpassing Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor’s team record of 132 ½.
Kawika Mitchell returned a fumble for a Giants touchdown.
Eli Manning completed 14-of-26 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Giants, who evened their record at 2-2 after opening the season with two straight losses.
Plaxico Burress caught the TD pass, for the Giants’ only offensive touchdown of the game.
The Giants’ defensive performance made for a miserable night for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who connected on just 15-of-31 passes for 138 yards.
With running back Brian Westbrook out due to an injury, Correll Buckhalter got the start for the Eagles (1-3), and rushed for 103 yards on 17 carries.
