Seve Trophy champions successfully defend

KILLENARD, Ireland, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The Great Britain and Ireland team Sunday fashioned an 8-2 singles victory over Continental Europe to retain the Seve Trophy at Killenard, Ireland, 16 1/2 - 11 1/2.

The outcome never was in doubt after defending champions quickly overcame its 9 1/2-8 1/2 deficit when the final day of the competition began.

The tone was set when Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie topped Sweden’s Robert Karlsson 1-up in the day’s first match.

Other winners included England's Paul Casey and Justin Rose, whose 2 and 1 victory against Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez capped Sunday's rout.

"I thought it was a great week," said G&B captain Nick Faldo. "All 20 players did their bit and I was delighted with my team."

"We just had a bad day," said his Continental counterpart, Seve Ballasteros. "It happens from time to time, just as it does in football (soccer)."

Faldo moves on to the Ryder Cup, where he has a chance to lead a fourth straight European victory against the United States.
