Solo kicked off World Cup squad

SHANGHAI, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Goaltender Hope Solo has been dismissed from the U.S. Women's World cup team.

Her dismissal by Coach Greg Ryan came after her critical remarks in the wake of the United States' stunning 4-0 loss to Brazil in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The loss ended the team's 51-match winning streak.

Ryan benched Solo in favor of veteran Brianna Scurry, even though Solo had not allowed a goal in 300 minutes.

Ryan defended his decision, and Solo was banned because it was felt she would be a distraction for Sunday morning's third-place match against Norway.

"This team will come together," Ryan insisted. "Sometimes opposition or frustration from different sources can help a team be even stronger."

Solo said she was not criticizing Scurry, but felt she would have done a better job against Brazil.

Scurry was 12-0 against Brazil before the loss, including two victories earlier this year.
