PITTSBURGH, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Jim Edmonds knocked in three runs Friday night, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh, 6-1.
The veteran centerfielder's rare pinch-hit three-run single in the top of the eighth broke open a close contest.
So Taguchi had two RBI. Albert Pujols had one RBI, and was one of four players with two hits, as the Cardinals won their third straight game.
The winner was reliever Russ Springer (8-1), the second of four St. Louis pitchers.
Matt Kata had two hits, including an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, for Pittsburgh’s lone run. Ronny Paulino, Jack Wilson and Nyjer Morgan all had one hit for the Pirates, who have lost eight times in their last 11 games.
The losing pitcher was reliever John Grabow (3-2). He walked three batters before Edmonds' big hit -- a short fly ball that Pittsburgh right-fielder Steve Pearce missed while trying to make a diving catch.
