CINCINNATI, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Disgruntled former Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones has transferred to the University of Cincinnati.
The announcement came Thursday after initial reports had him going to Northern Illinois.
Jones was the starter in Notre Dame's season-opening 33-3 loss to Georgia Tech and was benched by Coach Charlie Weis in favor of heralded freshman Jimmy Claussen.
Before he was benched, Jones fumbled twice and completed just 1-of-3 passes for four yards.
The Chicago native abruptly left the Irish Sept. 14 when he didn't board the team bus for the game at Michigan the next day.
He since has claimed Weis lied to him about his playing chances.
"People have to understand what went on at Notre Dame and let it stay there," Jones told the Cincinnati Post.
"It's not like I run away from competition."
The newspaper added Jones would start classes at Cincinnati Monday and practice with the football team Tuesday.
