Cecil Cooper named Astros' manager

HOUSTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Cecil Cooper Friday was named manager of baseball's Houston Astros.

He had held the interim tag since replacing the fired Phil Garner Aug. 27, and his record is 13-15.

Cooper joined the Astros in 2005 as their bench coach, the same job he did at Milwaukee in the 2002 season.

"This is a historic day in the history of the Houston Astros," team owner Drayton McLane told the Houston Chronicle. "He’s a person of great honor, honesty and integrity."

In his 17-year major league playing career, Cooper, 57, was a five time All-Star and won the Gold Glove twice as a first baseman with Boston and Milwaukee while batting .298 with 241 home runs and 1,125 RBI.

After his playing career, he also has managed Triple-A Indianapolis of the International League for two seasons.

The Astros will finish no better than fifth in the NL Central Division when the regular season ends Sunday.
