Detroit, last year's American League champion, was eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday when the New York Yankees defeated Tampa Bay.

Nick Blackburn (0-1) took the loss in the first decision of his career. He gave up six runs in two innings.
Johan Santana had pitched at least five innings in 123 straight outings, but that streak ended when he, too, left the game after the first rain delay.
