Briny Baird leads Viking Classic

MADISON, Miss., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Briny Baird shot a 9-under 63 Thursday and led by two shots when play was halted by darkness at the Viking Classic in Madison, Miss.

The opening round could not be concluded because of a two hour, 41 minute weather delay.

Cameron Beckman was alone in second at 65, while D.J. Trahan, David Branshaw and Steve Lowery were all at 66.

Only half the field was able to complete play at the Annandale Golf Club.

Baird birdied four of the first five holes as he opened a bid for what would be his first victory on the PGA Tour.

"I've been trying for eight years," Baird said. "I've tried every different approach you can try.

"I know I am good enough to win, but it's totally different to think you're good enough to win and to actually win. It's another level. So I need to step up one of these weeks and any time you can shoot 63 it's a good start."
