
MUMBAI, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Nicolas Kiefer of Germany finished off third-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu during Tuesday's first-round action at the Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open.
Kiefer lost just four points on his first serve and beat Mathieu 6-4, 6-3. The match had been suspended because of rain Monday, with the German leading 4-3 in the first set. Rain also disrupted play on Day 2 Tuesday.
In another upset, Rainer Schuettler" class="tpstyle">German Rainer Schuettler defeated seventh-seeded Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-5, 6-3.
Fourth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen" class="tpstyle">Finn Jarkko Nieminen and fifth-seeded Frenchman Fabrice Santoro avoided upsets, as Nieminen beat Italian Davide Sanguinetti 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 2-0 and Santoro beat countryman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 6-2.
Santoro was leading 2-0 in the second set Monday when play was called for the day. Sanguinetti retired Tuesday because of fatigue.
