Peer takes Luxembourg first-rounder

LUXEMBOURG, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Shahar Peer, the only seeded player playing Monday, posted a straight-set victory in the $600,000 Fortis Championships in tennis tournament in Luxembourg.

Peer, seeded seventh, got by Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-3 to highlight the first day of play in the hard-court tournament.

Other matches Monday saw Victoria Azarenka stop Agnieszka Radwanska 4-6, 7-5, 6-1; and Luxembourg native Anne Kremer beat Michaella Krajicek 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

Anna Chakvetadze is seeded first in the Fortis Championships while Ana Ivanovic is second. They received first-round byes and will open their sections of tournament Wednesday.

The winner of Sunday's Fortis Championship final will earn $88,265.
