MLB: Washington 13, N.Y. Mets 4

NEWYORK, N.Y., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Matt Chico won his first career road start Monday as the Washington Nationals posted a 13-4 victory over the New York Mets.

Chico (6-9), a 24-year- old left-hander, allowed three runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings to gain his first road start in seven decisions.

The Mets' lead in the National League East dropped to two games over idle Philadelphia. New York resumes its series with the Nationals Tuesday, while the Phillies open a three-game set with Atlanta.

Mike Pelfrey (3-8) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on five hits and five walks over 5 2/3 innings.

Austin Kearns hit a three-run homer and Ronnie Belliard also had three RBI for Washington.

David Wright had three hits and Moises Alou raised his MLB-leading hitting streak to 28 games.
