EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Chad Pennington threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for one Sunday in his return to the lineup, to lead the New York Jets past winless Miami, 31-28.

Pennington, who missed last week’s game due to a sprained ankle, was 15-of-22 passing with one touchdown and no interceptions for the Jets (1-2).

Thomas Jones ran for 110 yards in the win, while Leon Washington returned a kickoff in the second quarter 98 yards for a touchdown that staked New York to a 14-7 lead.

The Dolphins chipped away with a pair of second-quarter field goals by Jay Feely to pull to within one.

Pennington then threw four yards to Chris Baker for a touchdown with two seconds remaining in the half to give the Jets a 21-13 lead at the break.

New York moved ahead, 31-13, on a 21-yard field goal by Mike Nugent and Pennington’s two-yard run up the middle with 12:51 to play in the fourth quarter.

Miami scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the Jets held on for the win.
