MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Kevin Slowey allowed an earned run and just four hits in seven innings Sunday afternoon as Minnesota trounced the Chicago White Sox, 7-1.

The rookie right-hander retired 12 straight batters in one stretch to help the Twins avert a three-game sweep.

He benefited from three-run outbursts in the sixth and seventh innings.

Minnesota’s Michael Cuddyer had two hits and four RBI.

Three players drove in one run, while Jason Bartlett and Jason Kubel also had two hits for the Twins, who have only four wins in their last 10 games.

In Minnesota’s final home game this season, Slowey (4-0) had no walks and a career-high nine strikeouts.

Chicago’s lone run came on Jose Uribe’s RBI single in the top of the second.

Josh Fields had two hits for the White Sox, who failed to get their third three-game sweep.

Losing pitcher Gavin Floyd (1-5) gave up four earned runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with three walks and seven strikeouts.
