SAN DIEGO, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Scott Hairston hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning Wednesday night, giving the San Diego Padres a dramatic 5-3 victory over Pittsburgh.
Hairston's heroics allowed the Padres to stay within a game of division-leading Arizona in the National League West. San Diego also increased its wild-card lead over Philadelphia to 2 1/2 games.
Pittsburgh had owned a 3-2 lead since the third, but the Padres came back off Matt Capps (4-7).
Adrian Gonzalez doubled with one out in the ninth and, after Brady Clark came on to pinch-run, Kevin Kouzmanoff drew a two-out walk.
That brought up Hairston, who took a called strike before hitting one out to left for his eighth homer of the year.
That made a winner out of Cla Meredith (5-6), who worked a perfect top of the 10th.
