PHOENIX, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Jose Valverde survived ninth-inning problems Wednesday night to protect Arizona's division lead as the Diamondbacks downed San Francisco, 6-4.
Chris Snyder had three hits and drove in three runs, as the Diamondbacks stayed a game in front of San Diego in the chase for the National League West title.
Valverde allowed the first two batters to reach base in the ninth, but retired the next three to record his 46th save.
Juan Cruz (6-1) faced only one man but still picked up the victory. Cruz came on to replace Arizona starter Doug Davis with two away in the fifth, and struck out Daniel Ortmeier after the Giants had scored twice in the inning to take the lead.
Arizona regained the advantage in the bottom of the frame when Snyder's two-run double drove starter Barry Zito (9-13) from the mound. Zito, who gave up five runs on nine hits, is 0-2 in his last six starts.
