WISHAM, England, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Sweden’s Martin Erlandsson Thursday shot 9-under-par 63 to take a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the British Masters at Wisham, England.

His score bettered by one stroke the record at the Belfry course at Sutton Coldfield.

"It is the best round of golf I have ever played," said Erlandsson, who started on the back nine with a 29. "I’ve never shot a 29 before and it feels very special. I chipped in for an eagle on the third and that's what got me up and running. It was brilliant. The last month or so I've really turned my season around."

Richard Sterne and Jarmo Sandelin share second place at 7-under 65.

Raphael Jacquelin and Soren Kjeldsen are tied for fourth at 6-under 66.

Defending champion Johan Edfors opened with a 1-under 71, which was good for a tie for 41st place with 12 other players.
