Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Pinch-hitter Rod Barajas' line-drive RBI provided the go-ahead run in the 14th Tuesday, powering Philadelphia Phillies past the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4.
Jason Werth tripled in two insurance runs, then Clay Condrey tossed a perfect bottom of the 14th to close things out for Jose Mesa (2-3), who went two scoreless innings. Werth finished 2-for-6 with two triples and three RBI.
Philadelphia moved within 1 1/2 games of New York in the NL East. Philadelphia remains 1 1/2 back of San Diego in the wild card race.
Cole Hamels allowed three earned runs but received a no-decision. The Phillies bullpen yielded just one run over 11 innings. Closer Brett Myers blew the save by allowing a run in the 10th.
Miguel Cairo was 3-for-6 for the Cardinals, who have lost 12 of their last 13.
Todd Wellemeyer gave up one earned run on one hit, while walking three in two innings. St. Louis used 10 relievers, who combined to surrender six runs on seven hits over 12 frames. Mike Maroth (5-7) took the loss.
The 11 total pitchers established an NL record. The 28 total players used by St. Louis also tied a National League mark.
