BOSTON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Home runs by Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano ignited a six-run eighth inning Friday night, as the New York Yankees rallied past Boston, 8-7.

The Yankees' improbable win drew them within 4 1/2 games of the Red Sox in the race for the American League East crown. New York remained three games ahead of Detroit in the wild-card chase.

Boston owned a 6-2 lead going into the eighth, with Hideki Okajima on the mound.

Giambi and Cano hit back-to-back home runs to open the inning. After Melky Cabrera walked and Johnny Damon doubled him to third, Okajima was replaced by eventual loser Jonathan Papelbon (1-3).

Derek Jeter kept things going with a single that scored Cabrera and a double by Bobby Abreu that delivered both Damon and Jeter to tie the game.

Alex Rodriguez singled in Abreu to put the Yankees in front.

The win went to Brian Bruney (3-1), who threw 1 1/3 innings of relief. Mariano Rivera picked up his 27th save.
