LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- James Loney had three hits and drove in four runs Thursday night in carrying the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-3 victory over San Diego.

The Padres lost for the sixth time in eight games and saw their lead in the National League wild-card race reduced to 1 1/2 games over both Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Loney doubled in a run in the first, singled in two more in the third and then singled home another in the fourth as the Dodgers built a 6-0 lead.

Los Angeles roughed up Greg Maddux (12-10), who had won his previous five decisions. Maddux allowed 10 hits and six runs over 3 1/3 innings.

David Wells, who was placed on waivers by the Padres earlier this year, evened his record at 8-8 by lasting six innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Wells is unbeaten in his last four starts (3-0).
